With the summer comes the sun and the rain gets scarce. While this is a phenomenon that we humans like very much, unfortunately most of our plants can’t do without water. During this time of the year, all of us gardeners are looking for solutions to perfectionate the irrigation systems in our gardens.
Recently I discovered an ancient system using unglazed clay pots, which will save a lot of water in your garden. It is an autonomous, efficient, economic, and ecological irrigation system. It is a 4,000-year-old technology and is still used today in traditional farming and in many permaculture gardens around the world. This method of irrigation has been successfully adopted in North Africa for crops grown on arid soils.
It is easy to fabricate an ‘Olla’ on your own. All you need is two small clay pots and some tile glue. Check out “Olla” on YouTube and you will find all kind of advice.
Voila! Here are my Ollas in the making, and installed in the vegetable bed, with an added funnel to collect the rainwater.
If DIY is not your thing you can buy these clay pots, called Ollas, ready-made!
